5D Tom - I have been wondering why do yall have to live on a reservation or is it that yall want to... or are you forced to?

The Native Americans who live here choose to live here now; they are not forced to live here. However, when the treaty was signed in 1872, any Native American who was here and who was visiting here, had to stay. So some of the Native Americans were from Oregon but just visiting relatives, and they had to stay here and could not move back. They had to restart their families here.

5AMacT.- Do the kids of Nespelem School live in the city or near by it?
Some live in the Dam

Ms. Edwards said

at 9:04 pm on Apr 28, 2009

Some kids live in the small town of Nespelem, just down the street from the school. North of Nespelem are the "HUDs": new HUD and old HUD. HUD means the houses were built by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Some kids bus from two miles away at the Colville Agency where the business and government of the Colville Tribe is conducted. Several live fourteen miles away in the towns of Elmer City, Coulee Dam, Grand Coulee, or Electric City (they are one after the other around and past the Grand Coulee Dam). A few may come to work with their guardian and live in Omak (an hour away). Many live on farms or ranches or out of town. A few live at Rebecca Lake.

Ms. Edwards said

The Grand Coulee Dam area has a Fourth of July festival (lasts over a weekend) along with the Nespelem Fourth of July Pow Wow (lasts two weeks). We have a Colorama over Mother's Day at the Dam area. Pow Wows in Nespelem are on New Years, Ground Hog's Day, Root Feast (a religious celebration in the Seven Drums Church in spring whenever the roots are ready), Omak Stampede Pow Wow in August, Native American Day Pow Wow, Veteran's Day Pow Wow, Thanksgiving Pow Wow. In the winter, some families host Winter Dances that can last all night long and for two weeks. Many families travel from spring to fall on the "Pow Wow Circuit," going from pow wow to pow wow to compete for money. There are several rodeos around here too. We just had the Nespelem Rodeo last weekend. The kids were all tired!

I found an old postcard showing Indians "snagging salmon" in Oregon on the Columbia River before the dams were built and when the Celio Falls still flowed. See it at:

The long fringes of yarn represent grass. The grass dancers once stomped the grass down where the tipis were to be placed.
